First round of the 1998 FIDE World Championship knockout, played in Groningen in December 1997, game 6: Thomas Luther (2525) against Lajos Portisch (2610), in the Scotch Game. Portisch's 16...Qd6 throws away an edge, and 33...h3 is a blunder that hands White a clear advantage. Portisch fights back with an exchange sacrifice, 34...Rxd5, by far the best try, but Luther converts the endgame, and Black resigns after 67.Kxb4.
