A dinosaur hatched in a forest at the top of the world. It had about two months of daylight. Then the sun went down — and did not come back up for a hundred and twenty days. Seventy million years ago, in a forest that is now northern Alaska, whole communities of dinosaurs lived through four months of continuous polar night, every single year. Small, sharp-eyed hunters with eyes built unlike anything else in the dinosaur record. Herds of plant-eaters that may have walked thousands of kilometres to escape the dark — or may not have. And animals that simply stayed, and endured the season in place, the way their descendants still do at both ends of the world. Tonight we spend three hours in that forest, and in another one like it at the opposite pole, forty million years apart. We look at the real, unresolved evidence for both migration and residency — growth rings in fossil bone, nesting sites full of hatchlings, enormous bonebeds, and the eye sockets of an animal built for a sun that wasn't there for a third of its life. The question of what they did when the light went is still being argued about today. This documentary doesn't pretend to settle it. No adverts. No interruptions. Just a slow read, a long polar night, and a question that hasn't been closed yet. Sleep well. IF YOU ENJOYED THIS 252 Million Years in One Documentary — the complete dinosaur story, from the first of them to the last. When You Could Walk From Pole to Pole — a hundred million years when every continent on Earth was one. ABOUT THIS CHANNEL Sleepy Nature Fact makes long-form sleep documentaries about deep time, deep ocean, and the slow processes that shaped the planet. Every video is ad-free and read at a pace designed for falling asleep to. New documentary every Friday evening. A NOTE ON THE SCIENCE The central question of this video — whether polar dinosaurs migrated, overwintered, or both — is a genuine, unresolved debate in palaeontology. Where the evidence points in more than one direction, the narration says so rather than choosing an answer for the sake of a tidy story. #sleepdocumentary #dinosaurs #polardinosaurs #paleontology #falllasleepfast
