Se lanzó exclusivamente para Xbox 360 como título de estreno en noviembre de 2005. La revista Official Xbox Magazine lo calificó como el "Juego del Año" para Xbox 360 (2005), así como el "Mejor juego en primera persona (no shooter) del año", gracias a su vista realista desde el interior del coche. Una secuela, Project Gotham Racing 4, se lanzó en octubre de 2007. A sequel, Project Gotham Racing 4, was released in October 2007.
