Trains hate hills: steel wheels roll easily but grip weakly. So in 1882 the Gotthard railway spiraled inside its mountains to climb to 1,151 m. In 2016 Switzerland opened a different answer: a 57 km railway that stays at the height of the valleys, under up to 2,300 m of rock. We cut the real Alps open to show both lines, how the deep one was built, and the next one being dug under the Brenner Pass. No narration: every fact is on screen and sourced below.
