How do we respond as leaders when we are faced with pressure, uncertainty, difficult conversations, or challenging situations?
In this eleventh fortnightly session of the Strength-Based Leadership Community, Om Dhungel and Sara Shrestha explore Resilient Leadership: Responding, Not Reacting, joined by special guest Chris Anthony.
The session explores resilient leadership as the ability to create space between what happens and how we choose to respond. When we do not pause and reflect, our emotions and past experiences can influence our actions. By becoming more intentional, we can respond in ways that better reflect our values, purpose, and the kind of leader we want to be.
A practical idea introduced during the session is the Pause, Reflect, Respond approach. Before responding to a difficult conversation, tension, or stressful moment, we can pause, recognise what we are feeling, reflect on what may be influencing us, and consider what response would best align with our values. This simple practice can help turn an automatic reaction into a more thoughtful leadership response.
Drawing from his own leadership journey, Chris shares how he became what he describes as an ""accidental leader."" Leadership development helped him recognise strengths and potential within himself that he had not previously seen. It also shifted his perspective from seeking validation and trying to please others towards understanding the bigger picture, thinking strategically, acting purposefully, and focusing on meaningful outcomes.
Chris also reflects on the importance of taking responsibility for our own growth rather than waiting for the perfect moment. Through his work mentoring and coaching university students, he encourages people to participate, test the waters, speak up, and recognise that everything is a work in progress. His experience highlights how resilience can grow when we move from being passive observers to active contributors.
A central theme throughout the conversation is the importance of seeing potential in people and helping them recognise what they are capable of becoming. Chris shares how mentoring, coaching, and sharing our own experiences can help others shorten their learning journey, develop confidence, and build the resilience and grit needed to keep moving forward through challenges.
The conversation also highlights that resilient leadership is deeply connected to relationships, empathy, compassion, and belonging. Leadership is not simply about performance, titles, or organisational systems. It is also about understanding people as individuals, having meaningful conversations, recognising what they need, and creating environments where people can grow and contribute their unique strengths.
Whether you are leading a team, working within an organisation, mentoring others, supporting a community, or navigating challenges in your own leadership journey, this session invites you to reflect on an important question: when difficult moments arise, are you reacting automatically, or are you creating the space to pause, reflect, and respond?
Key takeaways from this session:
• Resilient leadership is about responding thoughtfully rather than reacting automatically.
• Pausing and reflecting can help us recognise the emotions and experiences influencing our actions.
• The Pause, Reflect, Respond approach provides a simple tool for navigating difficult or stressful situations.
• Leadership growth involves moving beyond seeking validation towards acting with greater purpose, strategy, and awareness.
• Resilience grows when we take responsibility, participate, speak up, and recognise that growth is always a work in progress.
