America asked Ukraine to stop hitting Russian refineries until after its elections. Within hours of that pause being reported, Ukrainian drones set a Russian refinery on fire, 4 days before the US midterms.
On 29 October, the Wall Street Journal reported that Ukraine had quietly paused strikes on Russian oil refineries after pressure from the Trump administration. Early on 30 October, the Novokuibyshevsk refinery in Russia's Samara region was burning. Drone maker Fire Point says its FP-1 drones hit the plant, including a unit that makes diesel. The same night, according to Moscow's mayor, 862 Ukrainian drones flew toward the Moscow region.
Why would Zelensky take this risk, when Washington controls Starlink limits and the intelligence that warns Kyiv about Russian missiles? And with Trump cancelling rallies and Republicans trailing in the polls, is Kyiv betting on the result of the US vote?
