Responding to Ben: ROCOR, Moscow, Heresy & the Truth About My Jurisdiction ‪@CleavetoAntiquity‬

In this livestream, I respond to Ben’s ( ‪@CleavetoAntiquity‬ ) accusations concerning my priesthood, jurisdiction, and the continuing Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCOR/ROCA). Rather than trading insults, I want to put the historical documents and theological issues on the table and let people examine the evidence for themselves. We will look at the 1971 ruling of the ROCOR Synod concerning the Moscow Patriarchate, the history surrounding the Soviet Church, Metropolitan Nikodim, Patriarch Kirill, and the ecclesiological questions that cannot simply be dismissed by applying the word “schismatic” to anyone who refuses communion with the modern Moscow Patriarchate. But there is an even more serious question: heresy. We will examine Patriarch Kirill’s own public statements, including the 2016 Havana Declaration signed with Pope Francis. What does it mean for an Orthodox Patriarch to call Roman Catholics “brothers in the Christian faith”? What does it mean to say that Orthodox and Roman Catholics share a “mission to preach the Gospel of Christ in the world today”? And what are the implications of declaring that this supposed common mission “excludes any form of proselytism”? We will also examine Canon 15 of the First-Second Council and an important distinction that is often ignored: recognizing that a hierarch has publicly confessed heresy is not identical to answering every subsequent canonical question concerning his jurisdiction, clergy, sacraments, or administrative acts. Canon 15 itself addresses separation from a hierarch publicly preaching heresy before his personal condemnation by a synod. Finally, we will look at Patriarch Kirill’s statements at the Summit of World Religious Leaders in Baku and ask whether this language can be reconciled with traditional Orthodox ecclesiology. This is ultimately about something much more important than YouTube personalities or jurisdictional labels. It is about the Orthodox Faith, the history of ROCOR, the boundaries of the Church, and what Orthodox Christians are supposed to do when a hierarch publicly teaches contrary to that Faith.
