Learn more about some of the most popular orchids in the world: Phalaenopsis! In this first video of mine I talk about the science regarding Phalaenopsis. The name Phalaenopsis derives from the Greek words “phalaena”, which means moth, and “opsis”, which means appearance. When it comes to cultivation, the orchid species P. aphrodite, P. amabilis, and P. schilleriana are the most popular. Hybrids of Phalaenopsis are also incredibly popular. The native distribution of Phalaenopsis orchids includes Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, Australia, and parts of tropical and subtropical mainland Asia. I also give you an up close look at the anatomy of Phalaenopsis orchids, as well as how the flowers get pollinated. The video ends off with a few frequently asked questions that I receive as an orchid conservation scientist: 1. My orchid stopped flowering, does that mean it’s dead? 2. Why do my orchids keep dying/ losing leaves, even though I give them plenty of water? / How much should I water my orchids? 3. My orchid stopped flowering, when will it flower again? 4. I purchased a Phalaenopsis with bright blue flowers; will the flowers be blue the next time it flowers?
