Baclaran is a vibrant, historic neighborhood located in Parañaque, Metro Manila. Here are the most fascinating fun facts about this bustling district. The word Baclaran comes from the Tagalog word "baklad," which refers to a woven bamboo fish contraption or trap. Centuries ago, the coastal area of Manila Bay was packed with these traps. The area was initially called "Bakladan" (the place of fish traps) before evolving into the name Baclaran. Before World War II and the subsequent rapid urban developments of the 1970s, Baclaran was a tranquil, seaside fishing village and a popular swimming retreat. High tide waters used to reach the very fences and refectory of the Baclaran Church convent. Due to massive land reclamation, the Manila Bay shoreline is now over a kilometer away from the church. The neighborhood is synonymous with the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (colloquially called Baclaran Church), which holds the title of the largest shrine in the world dedicated to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. It has a massive capacity, accommodating up to 11,000 people at a time.
