🔥 THE LEGEND OF THE HARVEST DRAKE
Each autumn, after the last grain has been gathered and the evenings begin to carry the first chill of winter, the people of the valley build the Harvest Drake.
Willow branches form its bones. Barley straw, grapevine, dried flowers, and remnants of the season's harvest fill its enormous wicker frame.
When the full moon rises, the Drake is set ablaze.
The tradition is said to honor an ancient dragon that once guarded the valley through a terrible winter. Unlike the dragons of old stories, it demanded no tribute and hoarded no treasure. It simply watched over the farms and villages until spring returned.
Then one morning, it was gone.
The following autumn, the villagers built the first Harvest Drake and sent their gratitude after it in a tower of flame, sparks, and smoke.
The tradition has continued ever since.
Travelers now tie small charms between the wicker ribs before nightfall—some carrying wishes for the year ahead, some marking things they are thankful for, and others representing burdens they would rather not carry into winter.
The innkeeper insists it is nothing more than an old harvest custom.
Though he does admit that, every few years, someone swears they saw the burning Drake turn its head toward the mountains.
