5 Bird Photography Tips That Actually Work in the Field

Better bird photography isn’t always about buying better camera gear. A lot of it comes down to understanding birds, being patient, and putting yourself in the right position before the moment happens. In this video, I’m sharing 5 bird photography tips I actually use in the field, along with real-world photographs showing how each technique has helped me get the shot. 1. Study the birds in the morning. Spend the beginning of your day watching where birds land, feed, perch and travel. Once you start recognizing their patterns, get yourself into position and let the birds come to you. 2. Try my 2-hour rule. Find a promising location, get comfortable and don't move for two hours. Birds may initially disappear when you arrive, but with enough patience, the natural activity around you often starts to return. 3. Learn bird calls. If there’s a specific species you want to photograph, listen to its call the night before. Recognizing that sound in the field can completely change your ability to locate birds before you ever see them. 4. Why I use a 200–600mm zoom. I need flexibility. Instead of constantly repositioning myself as a bird moves closer or farther away, a zoom allows me to stay planted and quickly change my composition. I’ll explain why the Sony 200–600mm has become such an important part of how I photograph birds. 5. Don’t avoid windy days. Wind creates movement everywhere — including your subject. When conditions get windy, I get into position and increase my shutter speed, often by around one stop, to give myself a better chance of freezing the bird and capturing a sharp photograph. These aren't tips from a textbook. They're techniques I've developed and used through thousands of hours photographing birds in the wild.
