What makes things happen? Curie plants a seed and finds out that a flower needs lots of pieces: soil, a seed, water and sunshine, all together, plus a little time. In this episode, children aged 5 to 6 meet the cause pie: each piece is a slice, and something happens only when the pie is full. Scientists test which pieces matter by taking one away. No water, no flower. No sunshine, no flower. And teddy, who sat next to the pot all week? Take teddy away and the flower still grows, so teddy was just there! To stop something happening, you only need to take one piece away, which is why we wash our hands. Say it with me: lots of pieces make it happen! Try it at home (with a grown-up): put a bean seed on cotton wool in two cups on a sunny windowsill. Water one cup every day and keep the other dry. Which one grows? Which piece was missing? For grown-ups: this episode is a child-sized version of the causal pie (sufficient-component cause) model from Kenneth Rothman's Epidemiology: An Introduction. Little Scientists Club: big questions, little scientists. Short animated science episodes for curious 5 and 6 year olds. #ScienceForKids #CauseAndEffect #KidsLearning
