The American Breeder Who Crossed Pit Bulls With Mastiffs to Create the Ultimate Guard Dog

In the 1960s, American veterinarian Dr. John Bayard Swinford set out to recreate one of history’s most formidable working guard dogs by crossing gamebred American Pit Bull Terriers with English and Neapolitan Mastiffs. The result was the Swinford Bandog, a powerful working dog developed to combine the strength and size of a mastiff with the athleticism, endurance, and determination of a pit bull. This documentary explores the origins of the historic Bandogge, Swinford’s experimental breeding program on Long Island, and the remarkable 127-pound brindle dog named Bantu. From the estate guardians of Tudor England to the sudden death of Swinford at just 37 years old, discover how one veterinarian’s vision created a lasting influence on modern guard dogs, even after his original bloodline disappeared.
