Are we overlooking some of the best values in watchmaking?
I had no idea Proxima existed until I started looking for a watch with a PT5000 movement. I liked the look, and at $143 all-in, I figured, why not?
In Episode 3 of Watch Companions, I take a closer look at the Proxima PX1697: its case finishing, sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert, bracelet, and high-beat automatic movement. We’ll also look at its timegrapher performance, the details revealed by macro photography, and the questions that remain about customer service and long-term ownership.
A higher price doesn’t automatically guarantee a better watch. Just as a lower price doesn’t necessarily mean you’re sacrificing quality. This is about looking at what a watch offers, and what it’s like to own and enjoy it.
The $143 mentioned is my personal purchase price, including tax, rather than the watch’s standard retail price. Timegrapher readings reflect my particular watch under the conditions shown; they aren’t a guarantee of how every example will perform.
No sponsors or paid reviews. Just my watch and my experience.
Have you owned a Proxima? I’d love to hear about your experience, including any dealings with their customer service. And what watch has surprised you most for the money?
