Explore Ueno, Tokyo on foot — and discover why temples, shrines and museums stand side by side in one park.
Ueno Park was once the grounds of Kan'eiji, a vast temple founded in 1625 to the northeast of Edo Castle (Edo is the former name of Tokyo). In this walking guide we follow the story from the temple's founding, through the Battle of Ueno in 1868, to 1873, when Ueno became one of Japan's first public parks — and then down to Shinobazu Pond and the busy Ameyoko market street.
Along the way, we translate real Japanese signs we passed: the park's name, the Moon Pine, a police box, a goshuin notice, the "exam-luck" Great Buddha, a shrine approach, takoyaki, and more.
Note: we visited the Tokyo National Museum, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and Ueno Zoo from the outside only — we didn't go inside. Filmed in October; the lotus flowers in Shinobazu Pond bloom in summer (roughly July–August, best in the morning).
