The Baudelairean Escape Protocol
Inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s poem L’Invitation au voyage.
In the Shattered Moon universe, an Escape Protocol is a dream sequence designed to be inserted into a Reality Suspension Device session.
Lambert owns one of these machines. He originally uses it for mind mapping: entering an artificial dream state that feels indistinguishable from reality while the device explores the architecture of his mind.
But Ondine discovers that she can connect to his session.
And suddenly the machine can be used for something else.
Together, they can leave reality behind.
Inside the Baudelairean Escape Protocol, they enter a shared dream world shaped by the imagery and longing of L’Invitation au voyage: sleeping palaces, polished rooms, deep mirrors, silent canals, rain against black windows, amber and gold—and a place where the world outside cannot reach them.
“There, all is order and beauty
Luxury, calm, and desire.”
For Lambert and Ondine, Baudelaire’s imagined country becomes almost real.
No screens.
No alarms.
No shattered Moon.
No obligations waiting beyond the dream.
Only a place created inside the machine where they can temporarily live together as though nothing else exists.
“I will build
In the shadow of machines
A fragile country
In your image
A secret harbor
For ancient souls
One last dream
Before the storm.”
The Baudelairean Escape Protocol is a darkwave cyberpunk reimagining of L’Invitation au voyage—and a love song about two people using technology not to escape into fantasy, but to briefly inhabit the impossible life reality will not give them.
The dream feels real.
They know it isn’t.
That doesn’t make the time they spend there any less theirs.
Come away.
Before the dawn takes us back.
