When he first embarked on his wrestling career, he was known as a "gentleman wrestler." In fact, in an interview featured in this video, Mark asserts that he never wants to hurt anyone. He is just looking to win his match ups, not seeking to inflict pain on his opponents. He manifested such sportsmanship in the beginning of his career, that after applying a 'sleeper hold, he carried off his opponent to the dressing room to ensure that said opponent was alright. Somewhere down the line, Mark Lewin's brain chemistry changed, and he became deranged, brutal, and relentless. His goal changed from winning each match to ending the careers of the jobbers he faced. Under the tutelage of Kevin Sullivan, Maniac Mark became the Purple Haze, and nothing that Mark did seemed to make sense inside and outside the ring. Indeed, he became part of the Fallen Angel contingent, worshiping the dark side, and celebrating destruction and chaos.
