Laal Qila || Red Fort-Delhi Complete Tour
Hello friends!
Today, we are going to explore the Red Fort, one of the most iconic monuments in Indian history. Many people believe it was built by Emperor Akbar, but that’s not true. In this video, you’ll learn who built it, why it was built, when it was built, and why it was needed. So watch till the end to get the full story!
🔴 Lahori Gate
The gate you see in front is called the Lahori Gate.It faces towards Lahore, and that’s how it got its name. Emperor Shah Jahan, who was born in Lahore on January 5, 1592, built this fort. The architects were Ustad Ahmad Lahori and Ustad Hamid, both from Lahore — which is why people called them “Lahori”. This gate was named Lahori Gate in their honor.
India Independence and the Red Fort:
When India achieved independence, our National Flag was first hoisted on this very fort.Since then, it has become a tradition that every year, on 15th August (Independence Day), the Prime Minister of India hoists the flag here. Many people think Republic Day is also celebrated here — that’s incorrect. Republic Day takes place at Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath).
🛍️ Chatta Bazaar / Meena Bazaar
Inside the fort lies the Chatta Bazaar, also known as Meena Bazaar — India’s first covered market.Until then, all markets were open-air.
Since this one had a roof, it was called “Chatta Bazaar” (meaning roofed market). It’s considered the first shopping mall of India, where both lower and upper floors had shops. This bazaar sold gold and silver utensils, gems, carpets, and luxury items. Shah Jahan built it for his royal ladies, so they could shop inside without stepping out of the fort.
🏛️ Naubat Khana / Nakkarkhana
The white building ahead is the Naubat Khana, or Drum House. In Mughal times, drums were played here to announce the emperor’s arrival or departure. It was like the doorbell of the fort, where guards would shout, “Hoshiyaar! Hoshiyaar!” (Be alert!).
⚖️ Diwan-e-Aam – The Hall of Public Audience
This is where the emperor listened to the grievances of common people. Shah Jahan would sit on his throne here while citizens presented their petitions. The hall is made of white marble and decorated with semi-precious stones like malachite, ruby, and carnelian, crafted using the art of Pietra Dura (Meenakari) — the same technique used in the Taj Mahal.
💎 Diwan-e-Khas – The Hall of Private Audience
This was reserved for royal guests and nobles. Here stood the legendary Peacock Throne, made of solid gold and studded with thousands of gems — including the famous Kohinoor diamond. In 1739, the Persian invader Nadir Shah looted the fort and took the throne to Iran, where it was later dismantled.
🌸 Rang Mahal – The Palace of Colors
This palace was built for the royal women and is also called the Zenana Mahal. It had fountains and water channels to keep the rooms cool.
A stream called Nahr-e-Bahisht (Stream of Paradise) ran through the center. At that time, the Yamuna River flowed right behind the fort, bringing cool air. The rooms were river-facing so the queens could enjoy the scenic view — after all, there was no Instagram back then!
🌿 Charbagh Garden
The fort’s gardens were laid out in the Charbagh style, divided into four parts with herbs, fruits, and flowers — even Ashwagandha was grown here. During the monsoon, the royal family would sit here to enjoy the rain.
⚔️ 1857 and the British Era
The First War of Independence (1857) began right here. The last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, was captured by the British and exiled to Rangoon, where he died on 27 November 1862. His three sons were executed, marking the end of the Mughal dynasty. The British used this fort for nearly 89 years, demolishing many Mughal structures and building army barracks instead.
