A rival insults a young envoy in front of the whole court, and the envoy says nothing back. This chapter of The Grey Book breaks down why staged provocations are built to borrow your reaction, not to win an argument, and lays out five ways to recognize the bait and refuse it: spotting the staging behind an insult, naming the prize the provoker actually wants, reading contempt as a confession of weakness, using delay to disarm fast, automatic reactions, and letting people misread your calm when it serves you. Drawing on Machiavelli's Prince and Discourses, Seneca's On Anger, and the logic behind loss aversion and confirmation bias, it reframes composure as a deliberate weapon rather than passivity. By the end, the viewer has a concrete method for turning a public insult into the provoker's own exposure.
