The Biodome is a large indoor zoological and botanical complex within the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden in Budapest, Hungary. It forms the centerpiece of the planned Pannonian Park, a roughly five-hectare development designed to combine modern animal habitats, botanical displays and immersive visitor environments. The Biodome itself covers approximately 1.7 hectares beneath a large translucent roof, allowing its interior environments to operate throughout the year. A major section of the complex, known as the Urban Oasis, opened to the public on 1 July 2026. Covering approximately one hectare of the Biodome's central hall, it contains extensive tropical and subtropical vegetation together with several animal species. The attraction also includes around 30 realistic, life-sized models of prehistoric reptiles, creating an exhibition that combines living nature with displays illustrating prehistoric life. The wider Biodome project is intended to incorporate habitats for animals including Asian elephants, bonobos and Indian rhinoceroses, as well as birds, reptiles and smaller mammals. Plans for the complex also include the Pannonian Sea aquarium, whose centerpiece is designed to be a shark tank containing more than two million litres of water. The broader theme explores the relationship between humans and nature while also referencing the prehistoric environments of the Carpathian Basin and the ancient Pannonian Sea. The Biodome represents one of the largest modern developments undertaken by Budapest Zoo, combining zoology, botany, paleontology and environmental education within an immersive indoor setting.
