Chuckie Egg is platform game for the BBC Micro, released by A & F Software in 1983. It is a port of the ZX Spectrum game written by Nigel Alderton, with the BBC version being ported by Doug Anderson (Painter, Cylon Attack, and the 'A' in A & F). Chuckie Egg is one of the legendary games of the early eighties computer scene, even getting a 'remake' in the form of Chuckie Egg 2017 on PC and Super Chuckie Egg on mobile. Nigel's ZX Spectrum version is of course a classic, but it was Anderson's BBC Micro port that many kids of the time remember, especially as it could often be found on the school's BBC Micro. In Chuckie Egg, you play the role of Hen House Harry. You job is to collect all the eggs in your eight barns while avoiding the hens wandering around the levels. If they come across piles of corn (pink for some reason, probably covered in some now illegal 1980s food additive) they will stop and eat them, though this is not often of any use to you. You can collect the corn too and you might as well, as it is worth 50 points a pile and briefly pauses the timer. The hens follow simple paths and don't chase you, but with only a few platforms and ladders on many of the screens, space to coexist can be limited. You can fall as far as you like in this game, but if you fall off the bottom of the screen, you will lose a life. When you jump, if you hit the edge of platform, you will bounce off it, which can lead to all sorts of chaos if it is a level with a lot of gaps in the platforms. Your final opponent is the duck. Initially it stays in its cage and does not bother you in any way. In later levels, screens 9 to 16 it replaces the hens, chasing you around the screen, and as it has the ability to sail straight through the platforms, it is quite a formidable opponent. It does carry a lot of inertia, so if you can keep moving, climbing, jumping and falling, you should be able to keep out of its grasp. From level 17 onwards, you have both the hens and the duck to contend with at the same time, and the number of hens keeps increasing. Chuckie Egg is one of the legendary classics for the BBC, much like Manic Miner was for the ZX Spectrum. It is difficult to find anything other than positives for this game, especially considering it was such an early game, released in 1983. The simple, but effective, graphics are good for the time, although there is a little character flicker on Harry. The sound is mostly cracks and crackles as you collect things, and the sound of Harry's feet running on the platforms and ladders. All very suitable without being intrusive, allowing you to focus on the timing of your jumps. Where the game really shines is the playability. Harry controls easily and is responsive to the controls and the action is fast paced, smooth, and fair - at least until the later levels! A definite must play for anyone exploring the games library of the BBC and a great example of how a relatively simple game concept, done well, can remain an enjoyable experience for decades.
