You wake up at 3:14 AM. Pitch dark. Your heart is hammering, and you start calculating how exhausted you'll be tomorrow. Modern medicine tells us that waking up at night is a defect called "maintenance insomnia."
Except it isn't.
For 99% of human history, sleeping 8 unbroken hours on the dangerous savanna ground was guaranteed suicide. We survived because our sleep was deliberately staggered across generations — a biological shield called the Sentinel Shift. Here is the lost evolutionary history of why you wake up before dawn, and why you aren't broken.

▸ The Sentinel Hypothesis & Hadza Sleep Study:

https://doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2017.0967
Finding: In 20 full nights, all 33 Hadza hunter-gatherers were asleep together for only 18 minutes total. Someone was awake 99.8% of the night, with an average of 8 adults alert every single minute.
▸ The Lost History of Biphasic Sleep:

Book: "At Day's Close: Night in Times Past" (W. W. Norton & Company, 2005).
https://doi.org/10.1086/ahr/106.2.343
Finding: Over 500 pre-industrial historical records document "first sleep" and "second sleep" separated by a peaceful 1-to-2 hour waking window called "the watch."
▸ The 14-Hour Darkness Experiment:
Thomas A. Wehr (1992). "In short photoperiods, human sleep is biphasic." Journal of Sleep Research, 1(2), 103–107.
https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-2869.1...
Finding: Modern humans placed in natural photoperiods naturally revert to biphasic sleep, releasing massive surges of prolactin (the hormone of quiet contemplation) during the midnight waking hour.
▸ Primate Sleep Architecture & The Ground Sleeping Paradox:
David R. Samson, Charles L. Nunn (2021). "Sleep in human evolution: An ancestral mismatch?" American Journal of Biological Anthropology.
https://doi.org/10.1002/ajpa.24278
Finding: Humans sleep shorter, deeper, and with more REM than any other primate — an evolutionary trade-off made possible only by social sentinel vigilance.
