I joined the Athens Walks Traditional Greek Food Tour, a 4-hour guided experience that introduced our small group of six to some of Athens' most iconic foods, neighborhoods, and local traditions. Our wonderful guide, Anastasia, shared the history behind each stop while leading us through bustling streets, historic markets, and family-owned businesses. Along the way we enjoyed: 🥧 Traditional Spanakopita & Tiropita (Greek pies) 🧀 Five Greek cheeses with Greek yogurt and honey 🍯 Fresh Loukoumades from Krinos, serving Athens since 1923 🥩 A walk through the famous Varvakios Central Market ☕ An authentic Greek coffee demonstration using heated sand and traditional copper pots 🫒 Fresh olives, produce and local market specialties 🍽️ A family-style meal at a traditional Greek Taverna featuring Greek salad, fava, zucchini balls, fried anchovies, squid, chicken, fresh bread with olive oil, stuffed peppers with feta, and much more 🍯 Honey tastings 🌯 Authentic Greek Gyros 🍨 Delicious Gelato to finish the day One of the most surprising moments happened while we were outside one of the food stops. Construction crews were using jackhammers to remove sections of the street after discovering ancient painted artifacts beneath the pavement. Anastasia explained that discoveries like this aren't unusual in Athens—a reminder that history is literally beneath your feet.
