Subtropical Storm Josephine is moving away from the U.S. East Coast, but coastal flooding continues along New Jersey’s Jersey Shore as water pushed inland by days of strong northeast winds drains slowly from back bays and tidal waterways. On Thursday, October 22, 2026, Ocean County faced another high-tide test, with up to one foot of flooding possible in low-lying areas despite clear skies and little to no rain.
In this video... we track Josephine’s transformation from a nor’easter into the tenth named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, explain why an offshore storm can flood New Jersey without bringing rain, and examine the latest coastal flood threat around Toms River, Seaside Heights and Long Beach Island. We also look at beach erosion, hazardous boating conditions and dangerous rip currents.
Forecasters expected Thursday morning’s high tide to be the highest of the week, even as Josephine pulled farther out to sea. Repeated high tides and waves exceeding ten feet offshore have pushed water into vulnerable bayside communities, where even minor tidal flooding can close roads and disrupt travel. A smaller round of flooding remained possible Thursday evening.
Josephine could strengthen further over the Atlantic, potentially reaching hurricane-force winds well away from land. Meanwhile, colder air is expected to return to New Jersey, bringing possible frost inland on Friday and Saturday nights. The immediate concern, however, remains the water left behind by the storm.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
