What You'll Learn:
-Two-handed rhythmic techniques (flicks, inflections, grace notes)
-Pedal control and flowing textures
-The famous sus2/F# chord (super useful for neo soul)
-Eighth-note motors for forward motion
-Arpeggiation with the melody on top
-And critically: how to apply these grooves to other progressions so they're not just exercises
In this lesson, I walk through five two-handed neo-soul grooves, breaking down the voicings, the flicks and inflections in the middle voices, and the pedal work that ties it all together. We cover rootless minor 11 voicings, the lazy "grace note" jump from left hand to right hand that's everywhere in neo-soul, flowing textural playing where the inner voices move underneath a held melody, and the eighth-note motor that creates forward motion across the whole groove.
This one's geared toward intermediate and advanced players, but the most important part isn't memorizing the exercises — it's taking them off the page and applying them to your own chord progressions. I show you how to do that throughout the video.
