The Dark Truth Behind the Valar’s Fear of Morgoth is that victory could wound Middle-earth as deeply as defeat. After Melkor brought down the Two Lamps, the Valar faced a choice: confront him at once, or risk breaking the world further before the Children of Ilúvatar awoke. When Oromë discovers the Elves, Manwë calls the Valar to council and they march on Utumno. The campaign begins in the Years of the Trees 1090 and ends in 1099. The Valar even place a guard around Cuiviénen so the Elves are sheltered from the fighting, though they still feel the earth shake. Morgoth is captured and Utumno falls, but the Great Sea widens and the shape of Middle-earth changes. The cost gives the Valar’s earlier restraint a practical reason, while leaving an uneasy question: did caution protect the world, or did it let Morgoth’s influence spread for too long?
