Hey youuu! I hope you enjoyed my video. I’m a bit distant from my culture because I’ve grown apart from it over the years. I felt different, and I thought my food, clothes, and language were weird. So, I changed myself to fit in, but now I feel completely disconnected from my roots. I’m trying to reconnect with it because why should I care what others think? Don’t let others bring you down just because of who you are. God made you perfect the way you are, and no one else on earth is like you. Be the best version of yourself and don’t let anything or anyone bring you down. You like the beats? The term “Karen” can mean two different things, depending on what you mean. 1. Karen as a Group: • Who They Are: The Karen people are an indigenous group mostly in Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand. They also live in refugee camps around the world. They have their own languages, traditions, and ways of life. • History and Culture: The Karen have a long history of being strong and resilient. In recent years, they’ve had conflicts, especially in Myanmar where they’ve had political and military struggles. Their traditions, clothes, and way of living make them unique. Many Karen communities have had to leave their homes because of internal conflicts, which has added to the story of people fleeing their countries. 2. “Karen” as a Slang Term: • What It Means: In modern slang, especially on social media and in movies, the name “Karen” is used as a bad word. It usually describes a person (often a middle-aged white woman) who is seen as demanding more than is fair, especially when dealing with customer service or talking to authority figures. • Cultural Impact and Criticism: This use of “Karen” has started conversations about how people have power and how they act. Some people think the term is too simple or dismissive, while others think it brings attention to certain behaviours in social interactions. The stereotype often includes demands like insisting on speaking to a manager or acting in a way that seems disconnected from the norms of kindness and fairness. Just to clarify, these two meanings of “Karen” are totally different. The Karen people have a long and respected history and culture, while the slang term “Karen” is a recent internet thing that’s all about social entitlement. When you hear “Karen,” it’s important to pay attention to the context because if you mix up these meanings, you might end up saying something that’s not cool or disrespectful to an ethnic group. This dual perspective helps us understand the different meanings of “Karen” and shows us why it’s so important to be careful when we use it. ⸻ I’m awkward at social interactions because I’ve spent most of my time with people who didn’t want to get to know or like me. They verbally abused me, telling me I was hated and that the world hated me too. When I finally met people who liked me, I felt disconnected and thought they didn’t like me anymore. I pushed everyone away and believed they were better off without me. Now, when I interact with people, I overthink everything and act awkwardly. Once, a girl recognised me from TikTok and asked me questions, but I was so overthinking it that my words were jumbled and I had a bad lisp. I was excited, but I was too caught up in my own thoughts. I wanted to ask her to follow me on TikTok, but I was afraid she wouldn’t reciprocate. I don’t know who to make friends with or when to try, and if they don’t want to be friends, I take it personally and give up. I believe no one would want to be friends with me. If you’re struggling with the same problem, know that you’re not broken. Your brain is just overprotective. Social anxiety comes from your brain trying to shield you from perceived danger, but it overdoes it. Recognising this can help reduce the shame associated with it. • Social Anxiety Origin: Social anxiety stems from the brain’s overprotective nature, aiming to safeguard against perceived dangers like rejection or embarrassment. • Friendship Dynamics: Friendship is a two-way street, and awkward moments are common and don’t define a person’s likability. • Building Connections: Consistent small actions, like smiles or casual messages, are more effective than trying to impress quickly.
