The shoeshine man was still working his corner. The pie shop had its windows steamed right over. And behind one heavy door the whole night was already going: a saxophone leaning against the wall, a drummer keeping the heartbeat, a bass walking proud and quick. One more spin, one more dime. She had a black ribbon in her hair and she did not sit down once. Everybody in that room moved like the floor owed them something. When the last chord landed and the door swung shut behind us, the street was quiet again and the neon was still buzzing on the corner, same as before we came.
