Nagarpur Chowdhury Bari | Nagarpur Zamindar Bari History | Tangail Travel Guide | Bangladesh Travel Vlog
New travel videos every week! Welcome to Weekly Travel, your guide to exploring historical places, hidden gems, famous landmarks, and beautiful destinations in Bangladesh and around the world.
In this episode, we explore Nagarpur Chowdhury Bari (নাগরপুর চৌধুরী বাড়ি) in Nagarpur Upazila, Tangail District, Bangladesh. This historic zamindar estate offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s royal lifestyle, architectural heritage, cultural traditions, and remarkable past. If you are searching for Nagarpur history, Nagarpur Zamindar Bari, Tangail historical places, Nagarpur tourist places, or a complete Tangail travel guide, join us on this journey through one of the area's most interesting heritage destinations.
According to historical accounts, Jadunath Chowdhury established the Chowdhury zamindari estate on approximately 54 acres of land around the nineteenth century. The family later became associated with important developments in social welfare, architecture, culture, and sports. One of its notable members, Suresh Chandra Ray Chowdhury, played an important role in the establishment of East Bengal Club in 1920, making Nagarpur’s history part of the wider football history of the Indian subcontinent.
During this Nagarpur travel guide, we explore the magnificent main Baithakkhana building, which combines Western and Mughal architectural influences. We also discover the Nahabatkhana, where shehnai music once welcomed the morning, and Jhulan Dalan, associated with the family’s religious ceremonies, theatrical performances, and Jatra folk theatre. The estate also featured remarkable buildings known as Rangmahal, Fairy Palace, and Tiger Palace, along with a private zoo that reportedly housed peacocks, parrots, deer, a tiger named Ketaki, and a lion named Dyuti.
Another interesting attraction is the historic Horse Building, or Ghorar Dalan, which recalls the transportation and daily activities of the zamindari era. Although many of these old structures have deteriorated over time, they remain valuable reminders of Bangladesh’s architectural heritage and the lifestyle of the zamindars.
We also visit Pundarikaksha Charitable Hospital (পুণ্ডরীকাক্ষ দাতব্য চিকিৎসালয়), founded by Rai Bahadur Satish Chandra Ray Chowdhury in memory of his beloved son, Pundarikaksha. Its history reflects the importance of medical care and public welfare in old Bengal. Today, the institution serves local residents as Nagarpur Upazila Health Complex.
Our journey continues to Upendra Sarobar (উপেন্দ্র সরোবর), locally known as 12 Ghatla Dighi (১২ ঘাটলা দীঘি). This large historic pond, associated with the Chowdhury family, is known for its bathing ghats and surrounding natural scenery. Nearby, we explore Kathuri Shiva Temple (কাঠুরি শিব মন্দির), a religious and cultural landmark connected with the local Hindu community and its longstanding traditions.
Nagarpur Chowdhury Bari is more than an old zamindar house. It represents the history of Nagarpur, the cultural heritage of Tangail, the architectural traditions of Bengal, and stories of family, public service, and social change. From historic palaces and forgotten buildings to an old charitable hospital, a vast pond, and a traditional Shiva temple, this journey reveals many fascinating aspects of Bangladesh’s past.
