In 1959, Detroit built its cars as if there were no tomorrow. Fins reached for the sky, taillights looked like rocket exhausts, steel roofs folded into trunks, and one designer's glimpse through a fence had forced General Motors to throw away a whole year of finished designs. In this episode we look at ten of the most beautiful American cars of 1959, from the cleaned-up Chevrolet Corvette and the rare DeSoto Adventurer with its swivel seats to the Square Bird Ford Thunderbird, the retractable-roof Ford Galaxie Skyliner, the Imperial Crown with its Auto-Pilot cruise control, the enormous Continental Mark IV, the Wide-Track Pontiac Bonneville, the Buick Electra 225, the batwing Chevrolet Impala and the towering Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. For each car we find one hidden detail, meet the people behind it and follow what became of it. Which one would you have parked in your driveway in 1959? 0:00 Intro: The Year the Fins Touched the Sky 1:51 1959 Chevrolet Corvette 4:09 1959 DeSoto Adventurer 6:35 1959 Ford Thunderbird 9:05 1959 Ford Galaxie Skyliner 11:26 1959 Imperial Crown 13:44 1959 Continental Mark IV 16:13 1959 Pontiac Bonneville 18:27 1959 Buick Electra 225 20:53 1959 Chevrolet Impala 23:00 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz 25:24 The Most Beautiful Car of 1959?
