Chapter :- 9 Women , Caste and Reform Sati Practice Raja Rammohun Roy ( 1772-1833 ) Brahmi Sabha later known as Brahmi Samaj Changing lives of Widows 1829 Sati practice was banned Ishqarchandra Vidyasagar Swami Dayananad Saraswati Girls began going to School Women write about women Tarabai Shinde And Pandita Ramabai etc During the nineteenth century, many social reformers in India worked to improve the condition of women and challenge caste discrimination. One of the cruel practices against women was the Sati practice, in which a widow was forced to burn herself on her husband’s funeral pyre. This inhuman custom was strongly opposed by Raja Rammohun Roy (1772–1833), who believed that such practices were unjust and not supported by true religious teachings. He founded the Brahmo Sabha in 1828, which was later known as the Brahmo Samaj, to promote social reforms and spread modern ideas. Due to his efforts and the support of Governor-General Lord William Bentinck, the Sati practice was banned in 1829. Reformers also focused on improving the lives of widows, who were often treated badly and not allowed to remarry. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar played a key role in supporting widow remarriage and promoting women’s education. His efforts led to the passing of the Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act in 1856. Swami Dayanand Saraswati, the founder of the Arya Samaj, also supported women’s education and opposed caste discrimination. He believed that society should return to the true teachings of the Vedas. Gradually, girls began going to school, though many people in society opposed female education. Reformers opened schools for girls and encouraged families to educate their daughters. Educated women began to express their thoughts and write about their experiences. Tarabai Shinde criticized gender discrimination in her writings, while Pandita Ramabai worked for women’s rights and widow welfare. These women challenged social inequality and demanded justice for women. Thus, the nineteenth century witnessed important reforms that improved the status of women and questioned rigid caste and social practices in Indian society. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• • Class 8th History Playlist :    • Class-8 History NCERT   • Class 8th Geography :    • Geography NCERT Class:-8th   • Class 8th Polity :    • Class:-8th Polity NCERT by Priyanka Gaur   •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ✨About Me : I am Priyanka Gaur, an experienced educator who has served as a PGT English, Assistant Professor affiliated with Indraprastha University, and Vice Principal in a CBSE school. 📸 Social Media Handles : • INSTAGRAM : @priyankkaagauur   / priyankkaagauur   • Linkedin -   / priyankkaagauur   • Facebook-   / priyankkaagauur   •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• This series is specially designed for learners preparing for competitive exams such as CTET, HTET, UPTET, State TETs, KVS, DSSSB, and UPSC.
