Safe early years practice is not about removing every challenge from children’s experiences. It is about balancing potential risks with the benefits of exploration, learning and development. This lesson explains how practitioners can begin with each child’s abilities, interests, emotional needs and developmental stage when planning activities. It explores proactive risk assessment, including identifying hazards, reducing the likelihood of harm and preserving valuable learning opportunities. Using an outdoor nature trail as an example, the lesson shows how practitioners can adapt activities, prepare equipment, provide suitable supervision and involve children in discussions about safety. You will also learn how managed risk-taking can support critical thinking, problem-solving, confidence and resilience. The lesson concludes by considering how open communication and informed choices help children recognise hazards and respond to physical challenges more independently, while practitioners continue to maintain a safe and suitable environment.
