50 points on Friday, 50 on Saturday. 2 years later: 7 points and an ovation.
How does a man come back from an injury nobody had returned from?
Bernard King grew up in the Fort Greene projects of Brooklyn, starred at Tennessee and became the 7th pick of the 1977 draft. He bounced from the Nets to Utah, where he was suspended, then rebuilt himself at Golden State and came home to the Knicks in 1982. In 1984 the players of the league voted him their most valuable man ahead of Larry Bird.
This is a story of a stone game face invented in a cramped apartment to beat the pain. Arrests, a suspension with no return date and alcohol dependency nearly ended him before he was 24. Then came 100 points in 48 hours, a playoff war with Boston and Cedric Maxwell, and a single landing in Kansas City in 1985. The Knicks drafted Patrick Ewing and, after his return, let King go without a trade.
2 years alone in an empty gym, and what a rebuilt knee did next in Washington.
