You're answering emails, sitting in meetings, responding to Teams and Slack, checking things off your list and staying busy all day. So why does it still feel like the work that actually matters isn't getting done? The problem may be more than your workload. In this episode of No Filter | No Apologies, Katy and Rebecca sit down with Dr. Liane Davey, New York Times bestselling author, executive advisor and “The Teamwork Doctor,” to talk about Thoughtload, the invisible cognitive and emotional weight affecting how we work, think and perform. Liane breaks Thoughtload into three components: cognitive demands, emotional burdens and energy reserves. And once you understand those three pieces, a lot of what we experience at work starts looking different. They dig into why traditional to-do lists can work against us, how constant responsiveness destroys focused work, why managers shouldn't confuse immediate replies with performance, and how organizations can rethink the communication norms that keep employees in a constant state of interruption. Liane also challenges the obsession with productivity itself. Being active isn't the same as producing something useful, and producing more isn't necessarily the same as creating an outcome that matters. As she puts it during the conversation, sometimes the question isn't whether you're getting a lot done. It's whether you're “getting shit done or just doing a lot of shit.” For ambitious people, the answer isn't to stop caring or stop striving. Liane introduces the concept of building your Thoughtload metabolism, learning to identify what deserves your attention, what you can discard, what emotional narratives need to be processed and when you need enough space to think before taking on more. In this conversation: What Thoughtload actually is Why workload and Thoughtload aren't the same thing The three-list system that can replace one overwhelming to-do list How constant email, Slack and Teams interruptions affect performance Why leaders should stop rewarding responsiveness Activity vs. output vs. outcomes Why high performers need deliberate rest How to protect your most valuable hours of the day Why slowing down can actually help ambitious people create more value The “What? So what? Now what?” framework How leaders can make one-on-ones more useful How to identify your personal overwhelm pattern Where to find Liane's Thoughtload Audit and practical tools Connect with Dr. Liane Davey Learn more about Thoughtload, take Liane's free assessments and access Thoughtworld, her community and practical resource hub for putting the ideas from Thoughtload into practice: Thoughtload.com Thoughtworld includes resources across attention, emotion and energy, along with short learning videos, downloadable tools and a community for people working to make work work better.
