The end goal of Drill #1 is to overcome the fear of dropping our bike by learning HOW to drop it, as in the video, feet on the boards and staying on the seat.
You are going to do a controlled drop in order to get comfortable with it. As I said, have someone to help pick it up bc the drill is not picking it up but dropping it with skill.
Fear holds us back so we need to face it.
The GOAL of the 10-minute drills is to INTEGRATE something into our "new" normal way of riding. Integration can only be done through practice and repetition. That's why it's just one small drill each week. The drill may seem inconsequential and simple, but if you do it every day for 10-minutes it will bring you more confidence.
Here are some helpful tips to focus on this week. Remember it's just 10-minutes a day to work on this ONE specific thing. Of course, you may practice anything else you want outside of these 10-minutes.
The OBJECTIVE - intentionally drop the bike with FEET ON THE BOARDS
1. Make sure you are on a SOFT surface where neither you nor the bike will be hurt. I used the grass and a blanket
2. Wear your riding gear including helmet - it's just 10-minutes!
3. Have someone there to help you lift your bike.
4. Start with the bike on its side (in the position it should end up after you drop it)
5. Get on the bike while it's down and position yourself so you know where you should end up after the drop.
a. You should be as far forward on the seat up toward the tank as possible.
b. You should be countersitting on the right side of the seat (if drop is to the left) and leaning forward.
c. Your right shoulder is toward the right rear view mirror, elbows are bent, head is turned looking over left shoulder, and BOTH FEET ARE ON THE BOARDS.
d. Hold yourself in this position for 10-15 seconds to get the feel of it. Take a picture/video!
e. Dismount the bike (left-side drop) by taking your left foot off the board and putting it on the ground and leaning forward on the handlebars to bring your right leg over the seat pushing off the handlebars for leverage and support. It's opposite for right-side drop.
g. Repeat a through e several times for 10-minutes a day until you're ready to do the actual drop.
6. When doing the drop start from (the bike should fall onto the guards or a spare tire if you don't have guards) - Turn video on!
a. a leaning position (it will be harder to get your foot onto the board that quickly but you will need it for leverage to countersit).
b. straight up position (this is the scariest position)
7. Drop to the left.
a. right foot is on the board covering the rear brake (normal slow speed maneuver position)
b. left foot is on the ground to hold the bike in position
c. lift the left foot and put it on the board. Don't put your left foot on the ground until the bike lands (we are breaking the habit of putting a foot down on a drop). Focus on getting into the position you had to be in on Step #5(d) above for left side drop.
8. Drop to the right.
a. left foot is on the board
b. right foot is on the ground to hold the bike in position
c. lift the right foot and put it on the board. Don't put your right foot on the ground until the bike lands (we are breaking the habit of putting a foot down on a drop). Focus on getting into the position you had to be in on Step #5(d) above for right side drop.
9. Remember to HOLD ON, Lean Forward and Countersit so your weight is to the opposite side of the bike and your FEET REMAIN ON THE BOARDS. You should be in the same position as you were in Step # 5(d) above.
10. Dismount the bike as you did in Step #5(e) above.
