Everyone knows only two things can kill a giant squid: a sperm whale, or a bigger squid. Then swordfish bill fragments started turning up in sharks, in whales and in the hull of a submarine. This is how a fish dives to 540 metres every afternoon, heats its own eyes to see in the cold, and takes apart an animal four times its weight. And why a squid built to spot a 40-tonne whale never sees it coming.
