There's a beach in Brooklyn where 1950s trash literally washes up out of the ground, intact glass bottles, porcelain doll heads, ceramic plates, even horse bones from the 1800s. It's called Dead Horse Bay, and in 2020 the feds shut the whole thing down after discovering radioactive contamination buried in the landfill underneath. Five years later? Nothing's been cleaned up, the beach is still spilling history into Jamaica Bay, and nobody can say when (or if) that changes. Two entire communities were erased to create this place, and the objects glinting in the sand are the only record they left behind. Now a $66 million cleanup could erase them a third time. This is the story of Barren Island, Robert Moses, two broken navy deck markers, and the accidental time capsule the government doesn't know what to do with. A note on this one: Access to Dead Horse Bay is officially shut off per the NPS, and we made sure we didn't venture past any of the posted closure signs. You shouldn't either. The result is that we filmed some of the on-location stuff on different beaches very close by, but from the footage we can find online, Glass Bottle Beach looks very similar.
