Story Blurb
When my father turned sixty, he unveiled a family portrait for forty-five guests and called the picture the whole family. My face was a blank strip down the right edge. My brother’s wife stood where I used to stand. My mother had already pushed my chair behind a parlor palm, and my father turned my invitation face-down. It had been four years since a family photo included me. I didn’t argue. The uncut original was already in a manila envelope in my bag, an extra print the photo clerk handed me when I picked up his shirts. His boss, Feldman, was there to give him a twenty-five-year service plaque, and he would ask one question first: is everyone in the family in the picture? My father needed a nod. I stepped out from behind the plant, said okay, and laid the original over the cut. The plaque did not come out of the box…
Lessons from this story: - A family picture that has to hide a face is not the whole family. - You can let people eat and still refuse to clap for a lie. - If they want the public honor, they can say, in public, who was left out.
