Narration: It is evening, and the market is bustling with activity. Crowds of shoppers and the sounds of vendors calling out from their carts fill the air. Sushila and Tanvi are walking briskly through the market, carrying a bag of vegetables. Vegetable vendor (40): (Shouting) Get fresh okra—twenty rupees a kilo! Buy green ridge gourd, *Babuji*! Chaat vendor (32): (Calling out) Piping hot golgappas with spicy water! Come have some tangy *aloo-tikki chaat*, brother! Tanvi (22): (Tempted) Didi*, wait a moment! Look over there—such delicious, spicy *golgappas are being sold! The aroma alone has made me hungry. Sushila (34): To tell you the truth, Tanvi, my mouth is watering too—but such treats aren't in our destiny anymore. Tanvi (22): // We used to eat chaat and pakodis with friends every day. Now, it’s just work from morning till evening, then managing the household—life has shrunk down to just that. Sushila (34): // After marriage, you just have to suppress your own desires and live, Chhoti*. There’s no one left to ask about our cravings or preferences anymore. Come on, if we’re late, *Maa-ji will worry. Narration - The two of them hurry home. They find their mother-in-law, Kamlesh, lighting the chulha (traditional stove). Sushila (34): // Oh, *Maa-ji*! Why are you sitting in front of the smoke at this age? We were on our way back, after all... Kamlesh (60): (Coughing) // You two toil away at work all day, so I thought I’d cook the rotis myself. It would lighten your burden a little. Tanvi (22): (Holding her hand) // No, Maa-ji*, please get up from here. We’ll handle the stove now; you go sit on the *chauki (low wooden seat). Kamlesh (60): // Bless you, my daughters-in-law; my home is truly blessed to have hardworking daughters-in-law like you. Narration - Just then, the door latch rattles, and the other three daughters-in-law—Meena, Rekha, and Parul—step inside, looking exhausted. Meena (31): (Wiping away sweat) // Uff! There was such a huge pile of clothes at the tailoring center today that my back feels like it’s about to snap in two! Rekha (28): (Startled) // Oh, Badi Didi (Eldest Sister-in-law), why is Maa-ji sitting in front of the stove? Sushila (34): (Gesturing with her hand) // We just walked in from the market with the vegetables, Rekha; we were actually just about to move Maa-ji away from there. Parul (25): (Stepping forward) // *Maa-ji*, please get up and have some water. Rekha and I will quickly roll out the *rotis*. Kamlesh (60): // But you’ve all been toiling away in other people's homes and shops all day too. What else was I supposed to do while sitting at home? Tanvi (22): // But Ma-ji, no matter how back-breaking the labor, money is always tight when it comes to meeting one's needs or even the smallest of joys. Meena (31): // You’re right, Tanvi. Today, the lady of the house I work for was eating piping-hot kachoris she’d ordered from the market; my mouth watered just seeing them, but such treats aren't in our destiny! Narration - The five women were still talking when... Sushila (34): // (Looking outside) Ma-ji, the sun has set, but why hasn't anyone returned from the fields yet? Rekha (28): // Yes, *Didi*, they usually get back by this time every day. How did it get so late today? Narration - Just then, the five brothers—Ramesh, Suresh, Mahesh, Dinesh, and Mukesh—enter the house, drenched in sweat with gamchas (towels) tied around thei
