Paintings of Thanjavur - Filling Final Round

‪@dsourceindia‬ Thanjavur paintings are distinguished by their elaborate embellishment using semi-precious stones, pearls, glass pieces, and gold. Traditionally, only three stone colours are used—red, green, and white—carefully selected to maintain visual harmony and symbolic richness. The ornamental layout, locally referred to as “nice subbal,” is meticulously drawn along the borders, jewellery, throne, and other decorative elements, and then left to dry. Once the embossed areas are set, thin sheets of gold leaf are precisely cut into the required shapes and sizes and carefully applied over the raised surfaces and motifs. After the gilding process is complete, the final stage begins with the detailed painting, bringing the composition to life with vibrant colours and refined finishing.
