Radio Documentary / Biography of Congresswoman Barbara Charline Jordan (February 21, 1936 – January 17, 1996), an American lawyer, educator and politician who was a leader of the Civil Rights Movement.
She was best known for her eloquent opening statement at the House Judiciary Committee hearings during the impeachment process against Richard Nixon, and as the first African-American as well as the first woman to deliver a keynote address at the 1976 Democratic National Convention.
As the process of impeachment continues in our nation's capitol today (Jan 2021) it is a reminder of other times when our Executive was called to answer. During the hearings to consider whether to examine the evidence against President Richard Nixon, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan gained national attention for her eloquent and fair manner. This civil rights leader also teamed up with LBJ to make a real difference in the legislative path to equality.
