The history of Edinburgh is the story of a city that was locked onto a rock and had only one way left to grow — straight up. Hemmed in by a loch, a wall and a sheer cliff, medieval Old Town rose into stone dwelling-towers of six, ten, even fourteen storeys, tenements crammed with lords and paupers on a single stair, all of it under a permanent haze of coal smoke that earned the place its old name, Auld Reekie, Old Smoky. Edinburgh history runs deeper than those closes: the crag itself is a volcanic plug of hard black dolerite, shaped by ice into the crag and tail that gave the Royal Mile its spine, settled since the Bronze Age and known by the sixth century as Din Eidyn, the fort on the rock. From that summit the story climbs through Edinburgh Castle history and the tiny chapel raised around 1130, past King David I making it a royal burgh and founding Holyrood Abbey in 1128, down the Royal Mile history toward the marshy Nor Loch that would later be drained. This is Scottish history at its strangest turn — a choked capital that lost its parliament, drained its own loch and laid out a pale, straight Georgian New Town across the valley, becoming two cities in one. Through careful AI historical reconstruction trained on historical images, this history documentary lets you watch Edinburgh rise century by century, from a bare northern crag above the Firth of Forth to the Scotland we know.
