Explore Vienna’s urban side on this long city walk along the Donaukanal graffiti mile — from the Spittelau area toward the central canal zone near Schwedenplatz and Urania. This walk begins near the famous Spittelau waste incineration and district-heating plant, whose colorful façade was redesigned by Friedensreich Hundertwasser after a major fire in 1989. Along the route, we follow the Donaukanal walls, where legal graffiti areas, tags, murals, clubs, bridges, boats, cycling paths and waterside recreation create a very different side of Vienna. Highlights include the Spittelau area, the legal graffiti walls along the canal, Grelle Forelle, BLUE DANUBE excursion boats, Friedensbrücke, Summerstage, Augartenbrücke, FLEX, KEEP SMILING graffiti, the Floating Gardens, Salztorbrücke, Motto am Fluss, Schwedenbrücke and the Badeschiff. The Floating Gardens at the Kaiserbadschleuse provide around 1,500 square meters of public green recreation space with seating and lounging areas. The Donaukanal is one of Vienna’s most visible street-art corridors. Legal graffiti spots and Hall-of-Fame areas around the canal have helped shape this stretch into a constantly changing open-air gallery.
