His father, Cao Song, was the adopted son of the powerful eunuch Cao Teng, placing Cao Cao’s family within the political world of the Eastern Han court. During the chaos at the end of the Han dynasty, Cao Cao gradually consolidated control over northern China, defeated major rivals such as Lü Bu and Yuan Shao, and laid the political foundations for the state of Cao Wei. He was later made King of Wei. After his death, he was posthumously honored as Emperor Wu, and is often remembered as Emperor Wu of Wei. Cao Cao was not only one of the most important political and military figures of his age, but also a central figure in Jian’an literature. His poetry is known for its austere strength, direct language, and unusual ability to combine personal ambition, the experience of war, awareness of mortality, and vast natural imagery. In “Viewing the Sea” (Guan Canghai), Cao Cao stands at Jieshi and looks out over the ocean, moving from mountains, trees, and waves toward the sun, moon, and stars, until the poem expands to a cosmic scale. In “Though the Tortoise Lives Long” (Gui Sui Shou), he confronts aging and death directly, yet answers them with the famous lines: “An old steed may lie in the stable, yet its ambition reaches a thousand miles; a man of resolve may grow old, yet his heroic spirit does not fade.” Together, the two poems reveal some of the most distinctive qualities of Cao Cao’s writing: grandeur, severity, clarity, and an enduring will to move forward.
