What's the number one thing I teach people to take their watercolour painting to the next level? Whatever your current level, even just considering this principle and looking to implement as best you can will instantly improve your paintings! In this video I talk about creating a variety of different edges, in particular when considering how an object, in this case a bird, interacts with its background or environment. When painting anything, we generally don't want it to have too much of a "stuck on" feel. We want it to sit naturally and well within its environment or setting. One of the best ways to do this is to consider these variety of edges. Using the Rembrandt windmill from James Gurney's excellent book. We can see we have 4 basic configurations to choose from. I talk you through this principle, showing examples in my own watercolour paintings, followed by a demonstration of this idea in practice.
