Texas 1981 Yolanda Herrera Cold Case Solved — Her Killer Was Never a Suspect For more than four decades, the murder of 23-year-old Yolanda Herrera remained one of Texas's unanswered cold cases. She was last seen leaving Johnny's Inn in Universal City, Texas, in the early morning hours of April 11, 1981. Two days later, her body was discovered in a field near East Aviation Drive. Investigators determined that she had been murdered and that evidence indicated she had been sexually assaulted. The case went cold despite investigators preserving critical biological evidence. For years, detectives had no suspect who could be definitively connected to the crime. Then advances in DNA testing and forensic genetic genealogy reopened the investigation. In 2021, investigators developed a male DNA profile, but there was not enough information at the time to identify the person behind it. Years later, additional testing by Othram and forensic investigative genetic genealogy produced a lead that pointed investigators toward Kelly Lee Brower, a man who had lived in Universal City around the time of Herrera's murder. Investigators eventually obtained a DNA comparison that matched evidence from Herrera's case. Brower was arrested in Cottonwood, Arizona, on August 19, 2026, and authorities say he later confessed during questioning. He faces a capital murder charge and is awaiting prosecution in Texas. What makes this case remarkable is that the man investigators ultimately identified had never previously been considered a suspect. After nearly 45 years, preserved evidence, modern DNA technology, and forensic genealogy finally gave investigators the breakthrough they had been searching for. Watch until the end to follow the investigation from Yolanda Herrera's final known movements in 1981 to the DNA breakthrough that finally put a name to her alleged killer. #YolandaHerrera #ColdCase #TrueCrime #TexasColdCase #ColdCaseSolved #DNAEvidence #ForensicGenealogy #TrueCrime2026 #UnsolvedMurder #MurderInvestigation #TexasCrime Subscribe for carefully researched cold cases, true crime investigations, DNA breakthroughs & the stories behind long-unsolved murders.
