A $1,500 repair bill on a 150,000-mile car can be the smartest money you spend this year, or the start of an expensive mistake. The mileage alone won't tell you which.
In this video I walk through five checks: safety first (structural rust, brakes, steering, tires and the free VIN recall search), how certain the diagnosis really is, the condition of the rest of the car, the true cost of a replacement (payment, insurance, fees, depreciation), and whether the car still fits your life.
If the car can be made safe and the rest of it checks out, a confirmed repair often beats a new payment. If safety or repeated breakdowns are the problem, the math changes. The repair, car values and estimates in this video are examples, not price quotes for your car.
150,000 miles isn't a verdict. It's a reason to look closely.
What's your mileage, what's the estimate, and what did the shop say is wrong?
