Video Courtesy of Devon Carroll “Zero to Hero” is the story of the SB2C Helldiver, the dive bomber that proved effective in latter WWII after significant engineering improvements, and of the heartwarming and humorous efforts of two young men to pull an abandoned Helldiver from the bottom of a lake in the Seattle area. That aircraft is now restored, and part of the flying collection at the museum. The Helldiver and their battle with the US Navy to retain the aircraft are a great story. There are three parts of this presentation, the history of the Helldiver and the aircraft now at the National Museum of WWII Aviation told by Docent Don Johnson, a video presentation of Matt McCauley and Jeff Hummel as they describe their retrieval of the aircraft and the resulting court battle, and a discussion including Matt McCauley, museum President and CEO Bill Klaers, Charles Hainline the pilot that flew the Helldiver in its inaugural public flight for “Zero to Hero” and Don Johnson.
