Does your baby cry, strain, turn red or push hard before passing stool? 😢👶
Many parents immediately think their baby is constipated, but crying and straining before passing stool does not always mean constipation.
Sometimes this is a normal developmental condition called Infant Dyschezia.
In this video, we explain the important difference between Infant Dyschezia and Constipation in babies and what parents should look for.
👶 What is Infant Dyschezia?
Infant dyschezia occurs in young infants who may strain and cry for several minutes before passing stool, even though the stool itself is soft. It happens because babies are still learning how to coordinate abdominal pressure with relaxation of the pelvic floor and anal muscles. Rome IV criteria describe infant dyschezia as occurring in an infant younger than 9 months with at least 10 minutes of straining and crying before passing a soft stool, without another health problem.

🚨 When could it be constipation?
Constipation is more likely when the baby has hard or dry stools, painful bowel movements, significant difficulty passing stool, stool retention or other concerning symptoms. The consistency of the stool is often more important than simply how frequently the baby poops.

❤️ Remember: A baby who strains and cries but eventually passes a soft stool may not be constipated.
Don't start laxatives, suppositories or repeated rectal stimulation just because your baby strains before passing a soft stool. If symptoms are persistent or you are concerned, discuss them with your pediatrician.
