Finally Add a Gate to Your Chain Link Fence: The Complete How-To

Adding a walk gate to an existing chain link fence — this is the whole job, start to finish. What you'll learn: Cutting the wire out link by link when it's stretched tight Sleeving a new gate post over an old post already set in concrete Digging a post hole through solid rock — one rock 8 inches thick Re-tensioning the wire with a hook so it never comes loose THE MEASUREMENTS: a 4-ft walk gate is actually 44-1/2" wide. Leave 3-1/2" for hinge and latch = 48" opening post to post. Cut your top rail at 56" and your wire at 55". Same math works on 5-ft and 6-ft wide gates. Watch yourself with panel stretchers — if one lets loose it'll knock the fire out of you.
